Charles River is seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician II to join their Insourcing Solutions team in San Diego, CA. This role involves maintaining and monitoring animal health and physical environments, assisting veterinarians with health cases, and performing technical in-life procedures. The technician will conduct clinical rounds, perform routine health monitoring, administer treatments, maintain medical records, and contribute to SOP development and training.
Assist veterinarians in documenting and triaging animal health cases.
Conduct regular clinical rounds, routine health monitoring, and examinations.
Implement preventive measures such as environmental enrichment and hydration support.
Assist in investigations of animal health issues and well-being concerns.
Recommend, administer, and record routine animal treatments.
Perform and document appropriate clinical observations; ensure corrective actions for health or welfare issues.
Notify veterinary staff and study directors of conditions indicating pain, distress, or potential study compromise.
Perform routine veterinary technical and husbandry skills (IV, IM, SQ, topical, oral administrations; venipuncture; sample collection; mouse reproductive care; animal restraint; nail trimming; monitoring critical animals).
Perform animal follow-up observations and track schedules.
Maintain appropriate medical records in accordance with study and regulatory requirements.
Assist in maintaining accurate record-keeping procedures for the veterinary department.
Maintain and follow complex procedures for animal health and treatment.
Provide input into creation/revision of SOPs and assist in implementation and training.
Support a culture of care, including animal health training and guidance for less experienced staff.
Assist in inventory and stocking of vet rooms (drugs, supplies) and organizing vet procedures rooms.
May perform tissue sampling, routine animal manipulations, and fluid/other treatments.
May perform routine technical and husbandry functions (general housekeeping) and adhere to safety procedures.
Assist in surgery and peri-surgery care (anesthesia monitoring, surgical pack preparation, supportive therapy).
Must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold heavy objects up to 25 pounds (over 50 pounds with assistance).
Must be able to perform procedures requiring talking, hearing, standing/sitting for long periods, data entry, using instruments, reaching, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment.
Must be able to frequently firmly hold species while utilizing fine motor skills.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Education: Associate degree (A.A./A.S.) or Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in animal or laboratory science, business, or related discipline.
Experience: Minimum of two – three (2 - 3) years of veterinary experience or six - twelve (6 - 12) months directly related laboratory animal experience in a laboratory animal facility.
Certification/Licensure: Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification from AALAS required. Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG), CVT, LVT, or RVT certification preferred.
Associate degree (A.A./A.S.) or Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in animal or laboratory science, business, or related discipline.
Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Weekends and holidays may be required as needed.
Requires wearing safety equipment (PPE) according to OSHA regulations and company standards. Works in a research environment with potential exposure to sharp objects, mechanical parts, toxic/caustic chemicals, biological hazards, fumes, airborne particles, and varying noise levels. Regularly works with live animals with risk of exposure to allergens, zoonotic disease, and biohazards. Regularly works with or near test articles with unknown levels of toxicity.
