This role involves leading a team of underwriting professionals within the Commercial Banking sector, focusing on achieving both growth and risk objectives. The Senior Director collaborates closely with Commercial Account Managers, Associate Vice Presidents, and Credit Risk Management to ensure positive financial outcomes through effective and timely credit underwriting for new and existing clients, while maintaining a balance between risk and reward in line with the bank's risk appetite.
Lead a team of underwriters, providing coaching, direct feedback, and upskilling to ensure exceptional client experiences.
Support the Commercial Banking team in managing and growing an existing portfolio of commercial lending relationships.
Complete assessments of existing and potential clients to determine alignment with the Bank's product offering, financing structures, and risk appetite.
Work with team members on initial transaction analysis and deal structuring.
Manage and review credit applications before submission to Credit Risk Management, ensuring high standards of financial analysis, credit structuring, risk identification & mitigation, and adherence to internal policies.
Occasionally author credit applications for the most complex transactions.
Assist the underwriting team with presenting credit applications and challenge team members to develop financing scenarios that meet client needs and the Bank's risk criteria.
Coordinate and lead discussions with Credit Risk Management.
Manage and monitor the loan portfolio to ensure alignment with the Bank’s established parameters.
Work with adjacent teams to ensure required conditions are met prior to funding, maintaining positive working relationships.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, economics, finance or a related field.
Professional designation(s) and/or an advanced degree is considered a strong asset.
10+ years of related commercial banking experience.
Experience building, developing and leading a team of high performing credit underwriting professionals.
Exceptional commercial credit analysis skills, and the ability to creatively solve problems.
Clear, succinct and persuasive credit writing capabilities.
An entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to blend strong technical knowledge with sound business judgement.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to effectively collaborate with partners at all levels.
