Senior Counsel - Trusts, Estates & Capacity

The Senior Counsel will be based in Toronto or Montreal and support the Global Technology & Trusts Law team, contributing to the Law Group's strategic and operational goals. This role involves providing legal support and guidance to various business partners and stakeholders on matters related to estates/successions, registered plans, powers of attorney/mandates, incapacity, trusts, and guardianship/tutorship in both common and civil law jurisdictions, with a specific focus on Quebec civil law. The successful candidate will report to the Managing Counsel leading the Trusts, Estates, and Capacity Centre of Excellence.

What We're Looking For

Identify, assess, and mitigate legal, reputational, and regulatory risks from escalations, client complaints, inquiries, and exception requests in areas such as estates, trusts, and capacity.,Provide sound legal advice on complex escalations, adhering to common law, civil law, and legislative requirements across RBC's lines of business.,Proactively review relevant legislation and case law that may impact RBC and inform stakeholders.,Collaborate with policy and procedure owners to update internal processes in line with RBC's risk tolerance.,Work with the team to develop legal tools and precedent responses to efficiently manage high volumes of inquiries and improve consistency.,JD / Bachelor of Law from an accredited law school, ideally Quebec, and qualified to practice law in a Canadian jurisdiction.,Proficient in French.,Working experience with the Civil Code of Quebec.,Minimum of 5 years of relevant legal experience.,Ability to manage multiple competing priorities, make independent decisions, and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.,Excellent drafting, communication, and problem-solving skills.,Bilingualism (English and French) required.

Ideal Candidate

JD / Bachelor of Law from an accredited law school, ideally Quebec, and qualified to practice law in a Canadian jurisdiction.,Minimum of 5 years of relevant legal experience.,Experience advising on trusts, estates, and capacity issues (Nice-to-have).,Some familiarity with securities regulatory requirements (Nice-to-have).,Experience in an in-house setting or financial institution (Nice-to-have).
