The Underwriting Department at TD Life assesses mortality and morbidity risks for individual and creditor insurance products, aiming to meet claims experience while focusing on customer experience in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. This role involves making appropriate medical underwriting decisions, evaluating detailed medical and non-medical risks, interpreting MIB findings, communicating with reinsurers, supporting claims, and providing clear explanations of decisions to clients and physicians. The underwriter must ensure compliance with TD's guidelines, maintain strong relationships with internal departments and reinsurers, monitor service standards, and engage in continuous professional development.
English and French Bilingualism,Minimum of 5 years of individual life insurance medical underwriting experience AND/OR a degree/diploma in Health Sciences or another medical background,Working towards ALU, FLMI, and FALU designations,Willingness to continue professional development by attending industry meetings,Appropriate medical underwriting assessment and decision-making,Ability to review, assess, analyze, and evaluate detailed medical and non-medical risks,Ability to determine mortality ratings and make substantiated final decisions,Ability to decide and interpret MIB findings and determine required MIB coding,Ability to communicate/negotiate with reinsurers for final decisions and applicable ratings,Provide support to the claims department and handle claim referrals,Communicate underwriting decisions and detailed explanations promptly and accurately to clients and physicians,Ensure applications are underwritten and processed according to TD's underwriting guidelines and third-party agreements,Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with other TD Insurance departments, bank departments, and reinsurers,Monitor and maintain service and production standards for the department,Participate in continuing education and self-development courses to stay current in medical advancements and trends,Assisting with the training and development of Junior Underwriters
AALU, ALMI designations, Industry related courses, and/or accreditations (LOMA/ALU) are assets,Minimum of 5 years Individual Life Insurance medical underwriting and/or a degree/diploma in Health Sciences or other medical background,Solid knowledge of underwriting function,Sound understanding of the Company's various business operations,Participate in continuing education and self-development courses to remain current in medical advancements and trends,Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
