The Summer Intern position at Charles River Laboratories focuses on providing high-quality daily care and husbandry to research animals. This role is crucial for maintaining animal well-being, ensuring a clean and organized vivarium environment, and adhering to regulatory compliance. Interns will contribute to the facility's overall operation and upkeep.
Handle, restrain, and provide care for various animal species.,Observe animals for general health and overall well-being.,Clean primary enclosures and surrounding areas for animals.,Sanitize cages, enrichment devices, and other related equipment.,Measure and distribute feed to animals according to established procedures.,Provide environmental enrichment for animals.,Inspect feeding and watering devices for proper function.,Perform all tasks in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice Regulations (GLPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).,Review documentation of functions performed for quality control.,Execute quarantine and isolation procedures related to husbandry tasks.,Perform duties related to the transportation, receipt, transfer, and distribution of animals.,Perform cagewash duties.,Collect laboratory data and independently use data collection equipment.,May perform basic veterinary technical and husbandry tasks under guidance, including: administering therapeutic measures (IV, IM, SQ, topical, oral routes), bandage/wrapping techniques, nail/hoof/teeth clipping/trimming, venipuncture techniques, vaginal swabs, proficient animal restraint techniques, and monitoring critical care animals (e.g., placing IVs, monitoring fluids).
Must be enrolled in a degree program.,Ability to handle common laboratory animal species.,Basic knowledge of GLP regulations (preferred).,Ability to work on semi-routine assignments, recognizing deviations from accepted practice.,Ability to receive and understand general instructions on routine work and detailed instructions on new assignments.,Physical ability to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold objects up to 50 pounds, including work materials, equipment, and animals.,Ability to perform procedures requiring talking, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods, data entry, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment (PPE).,Ability to frequently firmly hold species while utilizing fine motor skills.,Specific vision abilities, including close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
